Almost everyone hesitates before their first run club session. The fears are always the same: I'll be the slowest one there, everyone already knows each other, I'll get dropped on some brutal route I don't know. Then they go, and the fears turn out to be mostly wrong.

Picking the right club
Clubs have personalities. Some are social groups that happen to run — easy paces, coffee after, nobody checks a watch. Read the club's posts before you go. If every photo is a brunch table, it's a social club. If every post is interval splits, it's a training club. Most cities have both, and many clubs run different session types on different days — a social Wednesday and a workout Saturday.
What your first session actually looks like
- Arrive ten minutes early and tell whoever looks organized that it's your first time — clubs deal with newcomers every single week and most have a routine for it.
- Ask about pace groups and pick one slightly slower than you think you need. It's easier to move up next week than to blow up in week one.

- Most clubs are free or close to it for your first sessions. Don't commit money until you've been three times.
